The Early Childhood Educator Certificate Program is a scalable and replicable solution to address Indiana’s growing shortage of qualified early childhood educators. This gap is fueled by a growing shortage of qualified early childhood educators: too few individuals are entering the early childhood field and too many are leaving, projecting a shortfall of 9,000 early childhood workers by 2030. This leaves nearly 150,000 Hoosier children and their families without quality learning and care. Two-thirds of Indiana households, which include over 300,000 children, require childcare, but the state’s early childhood programs only have capacity to serve 55.8 percent of those children and their families. However, Indiana currently lacks the necessary capacity to provide high-quality early learning and care to all of its children. Eighty-five percent of a child’s capacity to learn, including executive functioning, social-emotional, self-regulatory, and literacy skills, is developed by the age of five, and studies continue to show the meaningful impact early childhood experiences have on a child’s future success in school and the workplace.
